California's Department of Toxic Substances Control opened a formal review this year into consumer products — toys included — that contain or shed microplastics. Across the Atlantic, the EU has been finalizing an amendment to its chemical safety rules that specifically targets synthetic polymer microplastics in toys and craft products, with industry groups negotiating the details through most of 2026.
None of this is final law yet, and it may take years to fully play out. But the direction is unmistakable: what's "normal" in toy manufacturing today is going to look outdated within a decade, the same way BPA-lined bottles and lead paint did in prior generations.
